Short definitions for terms used in San Pedro NZ seed records, collection profiles and growing information.

Areole
The small specialised structure on a cactus from which spines, flowers and new shoots can arise.
Clone
A plant propagated vegetatively from another plant, preserving the same genetic individual rather than creating a new seed-grown individual.
Cultivar (cv.)
A cultivated plant selected and maintained for particular characteristics. A cultivar name is not the same thing as a botanical species name.
Monstrose
An abnormal growth form in which the usual growth pattern is altered, often producing irregular or knobbly stems.
Open pollinated (OP)
Seed collected from a known seed parent where the pollen parent was not deliberately controlled or recorded.
Pollen parent
The plant that supplied pollen for a recorded cross. In a cross written A × B, B is the pollen parent.
Seed parent
The plant that bore the fruit and seed. In a cross written A × B, A is the seed parent.
Variegated
Growth showing areas with reduced or absent chlorophyll, often appearing yellow, cream or pale green beside normally green tissue.
