The San Pedro Collection

San Pedro Aroha with white tail spider

Most of our collection is Trichocereus, Echinopsis, and related species of cacti. We use these to produce cactus seeds or clones (cuttings) for sale. We ship seeds internationally, but clones are only available within New Zealand.

We generally use the taxonomic name that the seeds or plant was labelled as when we received them. It can be difficult to determine the exact species of a plant, particularly in the case of Trichocereus pachanoi, Trichocereus macrogonus, Trichocereus peruvianus, or Trichocereus santaensis.

Trichocereus pachanoi

Trichocereus pachanoi (also known as Echinopsis pachanoi, Trichocereus macrogonus var. pachanoi) is a fast-growing columnar cactus native to the Andes Mountains of Peru and Ecuador. It is easily recognized by its smooth green skin and typically short, blunt spines. The botanical name is derived from the famous Ecuadorian, Dr Abelardo Pachano, who was responsible for introducing this cactus to the North American botanists, Britton and Rose.

Trichocereus pachanoi is the cactus most commonly referred to as ‘San Pedro’, especially in New Zealand, where it is often considered the archetypal representative of the San Pedro group.

Trichocereus peruvianus

Trichocereus peruvianus (also known as Echinopsis peruviana, Trichocereus macrogonus var. peruvianus) is a columnar cactus native to the western slopes of the Andes in Peru. It is typically noted for its bluish-green hue and more prominent spines compared to other members of the San Pedro group.

Echinopsis hybrids

Trichocereus, Echinopsis, Lobivia, and Sohrensia species readily hybridize, forming both interspecific (between species) and intergeneric (between genera) hybrids. We use these parents plants to produce hybrids with striking forms, colours, and growth patterns not found in pure lines. These are ideal for collectors, breeders, and those wanting some colour in their cactus collection.
