Trichocereus pachanoi “Aroha”

Species: Trichocereus pachanoi (Trichocereus macrogonus var pachanoi; Echinopsis pachanoi)

Traits: Mostly very short spines, but occasionally longer spines. Some branches develop variegation, but generally in small patches, and not consistently on new growth. Seeds with “Aroha” as either the seed parent or pollen parent tend to produce high rates of variegated seedlings.

Origin & History: A seed-grown cactus purchased from Castle Rock Cactus Company in the mid-1990s. “Aroha” is the Maori word for “love.”

Notes: Trichocereus pachanoi “Jazz” looks very similar to “Aroha” and several attempts to cross-pollinate them have failed, suggesting that they might be the same clone.

Collection number: GW001
